El Camino del Rey, upper gorge
The upper gorge (Los Gaitanejos) at El Chorro is less frequently visited than the lower gorge; it is equally dramatic but of a different character. The walls are closer together, and heavily sculpted by millennia of churning water. The walkway of El Camino del Rey is generally in better condition here, even the handrails and the overhead curved supports for whatever covered it previously are still there. However the few missing sections are harder to traverse than in the lower gorge and require some climbing skills. The final section before a locked metal gate has been removed to prevent access from the top of the gorge. Photo © D.Etherington
