This famous stone bridge known as Stari Most, spans the Neretva river gorge and is the symbol of the town of Mostar, the fifth-largest city in the country. The bridge, originally built in 1566, was destroyed in November 1993 during the Bosnian-Herzegovian War.
It was later reconstructed with help from UNESCO, using the same methods and materials which the original Turkish architects employed nearly 500 years ago. It was re-opened with much celebration in 2004 and is now a popular tourist attraction.
