Luarca is a small fishing town known as the 'white village on the green coast' and is the capital of the municipality of Valdes. It sits between
sheer cliffs with the Rio Negro dividing the town in two with
several narrow bridges.
The 1959 Nobel Prize winner for Physiology and Medicine, Severo Ochoa, was a native of Luarca and lies in the cemetery at the chapel of Atalaya.
