The town is situated at the mouth of the River Eo on the borders of Galicia and Cantabria and was once the main port on the Cantabrian sea. The building with the ornate tower is the 'Torre de los Morenos', built in 1914 by the Moreno brothers Pedro y Juan.
Just along the coast is the beach of
Playa de las Catedrales, famous for its extraordinary rock formations.
