El Camino del Rey, the start
In El Chorro the River Guadalhorce has cut a deep gorge (Desfiladero de los Gaitanes) through the mountains. 'El Chorro' means the spurt in Spanish, and before the river was dammed the area used to suffer from sudden floods. The Camino del Rey was a pathway which allowed workers access through the gorge to the dam at the top. The dismantled start of the route can be seen at the left end of the green bridge, and is now popular with climbers and anyone with a good head for heights. Photo © D.Etherington
