Exeter Cathedral Close
Next to Exeter Cathedral is this row of ancient buildings steeped in history. The Royal Clarence Hotel was built in 1770 on the site of Sir Walter Raleigh's family town house, and is said to be the first hostelry in England to be known as a hotel. Sadly the hotel was completely destroyed by a massive fire on 28th October 2016, and restoration is currently due for completion in 2025.
The black and white building with the purple shutters is the once famous Mol's Coffee House with a crest dated 1596. To the left of Mol's is St Martins Church, one of three of Exeter's original six churches, and to the right is Hanson's, a well-known restaurant. The statue within the railings is of Richard Hooker (1554-1600) who helped to found the Anglican religious tradition.
