Although there never has been a railway in Dartmouth, the original plans for the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway would have taken the line across a new bridge into this station. The station had already been built when opposition from local seamen and merchants saw the route terminated at Kingswear on the opposite side of the river. The bridge was never built but the ferry carried passengers across to the station, which had a dedicated pontoon. The original station building seen here still remains, but is used as a restaurant.
